Do you speak ski? Learn some of the lingo!

Groomed slope: The slope terrain that has been groomed and is smooth - also referred to as

‘corduroy’ based on its appearance.

Lift capacity per hour: The number of people who can ride up the mountain on a lift in one hour.

Lift line: Skiers waiting to board a chair lift.

Moguls: Bumps on a ski slope formed by skiers making consecutive short turns.

Powder snow: Fresh snow that has fallen at a very low temperature.

Rope tow: A continuously moving rope that pulls skiers up the mountain as they stand on their skis.

Ski in – ski out: Lodging adjacent to slopes; guest ski to lifts.

Slopeside lodging: Lodging so close to slopes whereby guests can conveniently walk to the slopes.

Terrain park: An obstacle course for skiers featuring hits, splines, table tops and even quarter-pipes.

Tree line: The altitude above which trees do not grow on the mountains.

Vertical drop: The distance straight down the mountain.

Halfpipe: A channel constructed in the snow which resembles a pipe cut longitudinally.

Hit or kicker: A raised area with an abrupt lip from which snowboarders jump to get airborne

Regular foot: Riding with the left foot forward on the snowboard.

Alpine skiing: Downhill skiing.

Après-ski: The end of the day, after the slopes are closed when skiers go to the restaurants and bars to socialize and talk about the day.

Base lodge: A lodge at the base of the slopes, usually containing a variety of skier services, from ticketing to food.

Bowl skiing: Skiing in open, above-tree-line areas, down broad expanses without trails. Bowl skiing is often, but not always, for more advanced skiers.

Glade skiing: Downhill skiing in open areas surrounded by trees.

Gondola: An enclosed lift in which skiers stand or sit.

An additional 70 spaces are available at Donovan Park, 1600 South Frontage Rd., from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days when the Donovan Pavilion is not in use. A sign will be posted at the entrance to indicate availability.

The parking area will be serviced by the Matterhorn bus stop and the West Vail Red transit line services this bus stop to the LionsHead base area with service on the hour and half hour.
